It’s a mile stone in the history of PAOK, as well as that of Greek sports. Following a heart-stopping game, PAOK beats the Spanish team of CAI Zaragoza 76-72 and wins the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the unforgettable Geneva final. The date (26/3/91) will be forged forever in the collective memory, being a huge success for PAOK, who wins the European top, as well as for Greek basketball, being only the second time ever that a Greek team wins a European trophy.
However, the season will not end well for PAOK. First comes the Greek Cup final, when PAOK is the favorite, having a good psychological advantage as well having won the European trophy. The team loses to Panionios (70-73) and the team losses a title that seemed only certain before the jump ball.
The finals of the Greek League follow. PAOK begins challenging the title with a big disadvantage. In a time when the teams were carrying their regular season results into the playoffs, 0-2 seemed like an insurmountable obstacle for PAOK, against the permanent Champion team of Aris. However, with two back to back victories, PAOK ties the series 2-2 and although the team looks to be absolutely capable of winning another two games and the title, these two games are both lost in the last second and the along with them the Championship is also lost in the cruelest manner possible.
