PAOK head coach Pantelis Boutskos, after his team’s win over Iraklis at Ivanofeio, emphasized:
“Many congratulations to our players. There was a lack of energy in the first half, with Iraklis dominating the rebounds. We made some adjustments on defense and got a very important win in a tough court. I’m very proud of the atmosphere within the team. Even the message from Chougkaz, who was discharged after his surgery, says a lot about the team’s character. It’s very important to keep the players focused on the present and not let the next game distract them, especially when there are such important matches that can draw your attention. It takes great mental strength to keep going without losses with such a demanding schedule. It’s very important that we stayed focused and united during this period.”
The PAOK coach then added:
On rebounds and missed free throws:
“Rebounds were definitely an energy issue, as we had a very important and difficult game against Aris three days ago. Free throws are part of the game; we were playing in a venue where we knew a high level of concentration was required.”
On the team’s character and the players’ response:
“This is a group of players that has received a lot of criticism and many comparisons. We closed the locker room door and said that we can achieve something very special if we stay united. The most important thing is that everyone does it with enthusiasm. Even those who don’t play have a great mentality and create a fantastic locker room environment, and that is very important for the team’s character.”
On managing two derbies within four days:
“Essentially, we prepared for the game in the video room. We have a communication code for handling these situations. If you want to achieve important things, communication is crucial. It’s not just about playing hard. Iraklis is a team with motivation in a tough venue. We need to find the right communication codes to stay focused when the game becomes very demanding.”
On the team’s function and Tyree:
“We try to play in a targeted and methodical way where the advantage is created. This is a very important part of our philosophy. Since I’ve also studied economics, I can tell you that economics meets basketball. You have to create an advantage, and what’s important is to maximize and capitalize on it. That’s essentially our offensive philosophy.
It was a big challenge to find a communication code with Beverley and Tyree. Tyree is a player with great motivation. We discuss how he should study the game, how to mature as a leader, as a character and personality. He must learn from mistakes, find alternatives, stay calm, because he is very hungry and has strong emotions. He needs to stay focused when necessary and make the right decisions. At the highest level, the most important thing is making the right decisions. The support and acceptance he has from the group are fantastic. It’s not just about accepting your role, but loving it and executing it with enthusiasm. We are a group that has this mentality.”
