In 1959, PAOK won the first championship ever in the history of the club in any team sport. It was a unique success for the whole club that opened the road for the first official European games of PAOK. Against the Romanian SSA Bucharest, PAOK made his debut with the European competitions and more specifically with the Champions Winners’ Cup. On November 29, 1959, in the open court of YMCA, PAOK lost 61-80 to the Romanian Champions, having Giorgos Ekonomou as his top scorer (18 points). Two weeks later (13/12), PAOK travelled to Bucharest for the second leg. A second defeat (60-79, despite Ekonomou scoring 27 points) and a subsequent elimination. However, the beginning had been made, with international scrimmage games following in Belgium, Italy and Egypt. Despite the fact that it took PAOK 15 years to play in Europe again, the seed planted by that team in the European lounges at the end of the ‘50s, was about to come to fruition unimaginable after 40 years.
